VISIT OF SAND DUNE – DUNE DU PYLA

The Dune of Pyla (Dune du Pilat) is the tallest sand dune in Europe. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean, the Arcachon Bay and the luxuriant Landes forest, it stands 360 feet (110 meters) above sea level, and is over 1.68 miles (2.7 km) long and 546 yards (500 meters) wide. With more than 1 million visitors every year, the Dune of Pyla is consistently known as one of the most popular attractions in the region. It offers a stunning vista over the Banc d’Arguin, the entrance to the Bassin, Cap Ferret.

With such a unique and jaw-dropping setting, it’s no surprise that the dune is so popular, especially among those who take part in airborne recreational activities such as paragliding and extreme kiting. There are also several free on-site activities as well, including the sunset discovery tour in the summer months.

Visitors who prefer leisurely ascends should opt for the sturdy 160-step staircase, which is in place from April to November, while those in need of a good workout should definitely try and get to the top by trudging directly through the sand. Challenge guaranteed!

The Pyla Dune is located just 15 minutes away from Arcachon by car.

OYSTER FARM VISIT AND TASTING

One thing you’d be mistaken to miss in Arcachon Bay are its Oysters – the area is well-known throughout France for its Oysters farms, which produce some of the finest farmed bivalves you’re ever likely to swallow whole.

With a history of oyster harvesting dating back to ancient times and some 10,000 tons of oysters produced each year, slurping your way through a platter of fresh-from-the-sea oysters is a time-honored pastime in Arcachon.

Whether you’re a seafood aficionado or an oyster virgin, you simply can’t leave town without trying some of Arcachon’s famous oysters, and you won’t have to look far to find them either. During the summer, the region’s oyster-farming villages host a number of oyster festivals, oyster stalls line the sidewalks and seafront restaurants serve up huge bowls of oysters, accompanied by a fine selection of Bordeaux’s white wines.

• visit one of the oldest and most famous cheese shops in Bordeaux, visiting their cheese caveslocated in the stone-vaulted cellars of a XVth century
• visit a world-renowned Bordelaise company known for their resurrection of the canelé, the dessert originally prepared by the nuns for children
• finish with the pleasure of a wine tasting. A boutique wine bar will welcome us into their sun-filled courtyard where we will taste three Bordeaux wines each with its own unique style, selected for us and introduced by their wine steward

OPTION 2 –  BORDEAUX CITY GUIDED WALKING TOUR

This tour highlights the most famous landmarks in Bordeaux. During the tour you will visit the Grand Theatre located in the heart of downtown; the monument to the Girondins and its fountain which was slated to become scrap metal during WWII; the Allée de Tourny and its role in the architecture of this 18th-century city; the Place de la Bourse which was built by King Louis XV in the early 1700’s as the Royal Plaza, and rue St. Catherine which has been the “main street or high street” since Roman times. This walk is approximately 3km (2 miles), lasts for two hours, and is on paved and level sidewalks. No hills are involved.
